They Really Are5
Each chapter offers a profile of a major contributor to the evolution of American business history, beginning with one of my ancestors, Robert Morris (America's "first real businessman"), and concluding with Bill Gates ("Microsoft's cofounder and guiding spirit"). In between, Gross and his associates also examine other great leaders such as McCormick, Rockefeller, Morgan, Ford, Merrill, Sarnoff, Disney, Johnson, Ogilvy, Kroc, Wilson, Ash, Walton, and McGowan as well as major corporations such as American Express, Intel, Harley-Davidson, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. The reader is told, "This book is about heroes" and it really is.

Using the most effective strategies and devices of a storyteller, the authors examine biographical information within an historical context, sustaining interest with anecdotes while providing insights as to the causes and effects of each subject's accomplishments. For Morris, essentially the economic survival of thirteen colonies during their struggle for independence. For McCormick, the industrialization of agriculture. For Rockefeller, the creation and development of the modern corporation. For Morgan, saving a nation's financial system. For Ford, mass-producing affordable personal transportation. For Merrill, broadening the base of stock ownership to include those, among others, for whom the Ford Motor Company manufactured automobiles. Each of the other "heroes" discussed made equally important contributions.

A brief review such as this can only suggest (albeit inadequately) the wealth of information to be found in Greatest Business Stories of All Time. The prose has snap, crackle, and pop. The focus is crystal clear. The lessons to be learned from the careers examined are of incalculable value. Although this book will be of interest to almost anyone, it will have special importance for school, college, and university students who may sometimes wonder if there are any "secrets to success." The answer is yes. The specifics are to be found in the lives of those who are discussed in Greatest Business Stories of All Time.

Product Description

What do Bill Gates, Henry Ford, J. P. Morgan, Mary Kay Ash, and Walt Disney all have in common? Uncompromising vision, a willingness to take risks, and exceptional business acumen. Not only did these individuals amass great fortunes, they revolutionized the business world and helped shape society as we know it. Theirs are just a few of the stories collected in this anthology of commercial ingenuity.

Drawing on a wealth of sources, this priceless collection brings to life extraordinary achievements, many of them forgotten or little known: how Robert Morris, the preeminent merchant of the eighteenth century, financed the American Revolution with his personal credit; how Ray Kroc used a shrewd real estate strategy to turn a faltering hamburger franchise operation into the McDonald's fast food empire; and how Mary Kay Ash built a billion-dollar direct sales cosmetics company by preaching a message of economic empowerment to women.

Enlightening and fascinating, Forbes(r) Greatest Business Stories of All Time celebrates larger-than-life ambition, inspired leadership, wheeling and dealing, and hard work.

The Management Myth: Debunking Modern Business Philosophy

The Management Myth: Debunking Modern Business Philosophy

The Management Myth: Debunking Modern Business Philosophy by Matthew Stewart

Don't let your MBA students read this book ...5
... because if they read it, they may quit your program.

As a university professor guiding MBA and Doctor of Management courses, I encourage only my more capable and thoughtful students to read "The Management Myth." Why?

It is because in this book, Matthew Stewart correctly points out and supports that management is not a science and is too often pursued as a fad. Using many examples, he convinces that a good person educated in almost any subject can be a successful manager in business. Plainly said, Bill Gates, a college dropout, is not an aberration.

What is needed to be a manager, Stewart says astutely, is critical thinking and a propensity to ethical behavior -- not some knowledge of whatever methods are in current vogue at business schools.

If you want to know more of how to achieve success in business and other organizations, and you can accept innovative thinking, read "The Management Myth."

This book is the an incredible resource. It is over 2200 pages of small closely typed text, written by over 100 authors from both academia and business. Apart from articles it contains a Business dictionary, a world almanac and is supported by a web site that updates some of the content and contains summaries of the latest business books.

I bought this book because I needed a one-stop job for reviewing important businesses and ideas. I am working on my Ph.D. in Business Administration. This book is great in that if there is a concept unknown to me I can look it up and get up to speed on the ideas. This is a huge book and well worth the price. The book also has a companion website that provides up-to-date information as PDF downloads. Buy it if you are into business, curious about business, or working on advanced degree.

The "Business Bible" that captured the imaginations and fueled the ambitions of readers from the boardroom to the mailroom has now been completely revised and updated to reflect the state of the business world today. This one-ofa- kind reference guide offers readers a portable M.B.A. between two covers without the expense of tuition, the trouble of entrance exams, or the struggle of making it to classes on time. As business is arguably the most potent force in society today--CEOs wield more power and influence than political leaders, trade of goods and services spreads cultural values around the globe, even the rules of commerce increasingly govern the administration of our educational, nonprofit, and social institutions--it is more important than ever that professionals from all walks of life understand its language and its theories. Business: The Ultimate Resource captures the state of the art in business today, and the extensive revisions and additions make this second editionthe undisputed reference for anyone in the field. The additional material includes 30 new articles from authors such as Michael E. Gerber, Howard Rheingold, and Francis Fukuyama; the Management Library is 40 percent new with 39 articles, including "The Tipping Point" and "Barbarians at the Gate." Moreover, everything else--from the Actionlists to the Dictionary-is fully updated to reflect the latest in business knowledge. Business is the gold standard of insight and information for executives and managers, entrepreneurs, administrators, educators, and students alike.

Soar with Your Strengths: A Simple Yet Revolutionary Philosophy of Business and Management by Donald O. Clifton

A groundbreaking, inspiring book for businesses, managers, and individuals on how to achieve the absolute best by focusing on strengths and steering away from weaknesses, this revolutionary, humanistic approach to business will transform companies, build careers, and change lives.

This book has revolutionized my coaching practice and career counseling. The authors' theory of concentrating on your strengths and what you were meant to do makes perfect sense, now that they've said it. It's one of those books where you'll read it and say, "I knew that!" An obvious no-brainer for the young adult starting a career, I've found it exceptionally helpful for people in mid-life transition. Yes, it would've been good to have read it earlier, but at mid-life you've discovered through experience what does and doesn't work for you. This motivates change, and the changes you'll make after having read this, can be drastic. I find many mid-life clients unsatisfied with their work, yet unsure what to do about it, because they've come to know only their weaknesses. They yearn to do what they love, but aren't sure how to shape that. This book and the StrengthFinder (tm) profile jump-start the quest. I call this "humanistic," because once you know your strengths and are living them (and this applies to personal life as well as professional life), you soar. It's "deeply soul-satisfying," "a relief," and "the best thing I ever did," to quote some of my clients.
